History of The Church

 

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia. The government of Cambodia granted official recognition to the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Cambodia (E.L.C.C) on January 15. The government approval allows the 32 congregations and 17 pastors to begin working towards creating a constitutional frame work and a founding convention. Currently, Lutheran Church–Canada (LCC) is assisting Luther Institute Southeast Asia (LISA) to provide theological training for the church’s pastors, deacons and deaconesses with funding assistance from Concordia Lutheran Missionary Society (CLMS). LCC missionary Rev. Dr. Leonard Harms,  who serves as executive director of LISA, explained that the desire for establishing a Lutheran Church body in Cambodia came from the pastors and their congregations.

Message from Rev. Vanarith Chhim

Having elected as President of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Cambodia, I always counted to be great privillege to serve the church members. Many people might not understand much about the calling and ministry of the  of full-time pastor of the church is. My vision as the President is to help uniting the local churches to the same confession of Lutheran belief based on Luther's Small Catechism and the Book of Concord, translated into Khmer.

Graduation of LISA Students and Ordination of Church President

 

In the record of church history, Lutheran teaching has long way of birth since the 16th Reformation. but unlike in Cambodia, Lutheran teaching is known to be a new group in Cambodia. When Rev. Ted Natthalang first arrived in Cambodia to introduce the Lutheran teaching in Cambodia with the plan to produce Lutheran materials through translation and publications, There was very small group of Christians who knew about Lutheran teaching. In year 2003, first edition of Luther's small catechism was translated into Khmer (Cambodian Language)
